  •  Aadhaar is an individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on behalf of the Government of India to individuals for the purpose of establishing the unique identity of every single person.
  • Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is responsible for the processes of enrolment and authentication of Aadhaar Card under Aaadhaar Act, 2016. 
  • Its objective is to collect biometric and demographic data of residents, store them in a centralized database. 
  • First Aadhaar number was launched in Maharashtra in the village of Tembli, on 29 September 2010. Ranjana Sonawne: 782474317884 become the first Indian to get the (UID) number (termed as Aadhaar)
  • Each resident of India will receive 12-digit unique identify number called as Aadhaar. 
  • This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India.
  • Aadhaar is for individuals, therefore each member of the family needs to have a separate one.
  • It is a voluntary service that every resident can avail irrespective of present documentation. It is not mandatory to have Aadhaar card.
  • It is considered as world’s largest national identification number project. 
  • As of 31-March-2016 99.9 crore (999 million) Aadhaar numbers have been issued. 
  • Aadhaar is a unique random number which never starts with a 0 or 1. 
  • Each Aadhaar issued will be unique to an individual and will remain valid for lifetime.
  • There are no charges for Aadhaar enrolment for an individual.
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) cautioned people not to fall to ploys of some unscrupulous entities who are charging anywhere between Rs 50 to Rs 200 for printing Aadhaar on a plastic card in the name of smart card, as the Aadhaar letter or its cutaway portion or downloaded version of Aadhaar on ordinary paper is perfectly valid.
  • In case a person loses his Aadhaar card, he can download his Aadhaar card free of cost from UIDAI official site.
  • In case a person still wants to get his Aadhaar card laminated or printed on plastic card, he may do so only at authorized Common Service Centres or Aadhaar Permanent Enrolment Centres by paying no more than the prescribed rate, which is not more than Rs 30
  • Aadhaar-enabled bank account (AEBA) is a bank account linked to Aadhaar number of the resident that allows transactions on the basis of resident’s Aadhaar number.
  • After aadhaar card is received, individual needs to submit an application along with copy of the Aadhaar Card to the bank branch where he/she is maintaining an account. Bank will link the account making the account as Aadhaar Enabled Bank Account ( AEBA )
  • Aadhaar Payment Bridge (APB) System is a unique payment system implemented by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which uses Aadhaar number as a central key for electronically channelizing the Government subsidies and benefits in the Aadhaar Enabled Bank Accounts (AEBA) of the intended beneficiaries. 
  • The AEPS (Aadhaar-Enabled Payments System) is an interoperable network of microATMs that is operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It will enable the following interoperable transactions: 1. Cash withdrawal 2. Cash deposit 3. Balance enquiry 4. Remittance

Aadhaar Act
  • The Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and other Subsidies, benefits and services) Act, 2016 will provide for "efficient, transparent, and targeted delivery of subsidies, benefits and services, the expenditure for which is incurred from the Consolidated Fund of India, to individuals residing in India through assigning of unique identity numbers to such individuals.
  • For printing Aadhaar card as collecting such information or unauthorised printing of Aadhaar card or aiding such persons in any manner may amount to a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment under the Indian Penal Code and also Chapter VI of The Aadhaar Act, 2016.
